Our History

Friendship Baptist Church began ministering to the community of Gray Court in 1882.

Friendship Baptist Church was founded in 1882 by Rev. D.C. Freeman and members of Warriors Creek, Durbin Creek, Rabon Creek, Bethlehem at Spartanburg, and Harmony churches. It was accepted into membership of the Reedy River Association on September 15, 1882 and immediately affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist movement. Mr. Austin Cheek donated three acres of land to build the church where the current church stands today. Mr. W.E. Riddle offered his shop as a meeting house until the new church could be established. The pastorium, Pastor’s House, was built in 1948 as a six room house along with Gray Court Baptist Church since the two churches shared a pastor. In 1960, building began for an education building for Sunday School classes, a kitchen, and a vestibule was added to the church which was dedicated October 9, 1966. In 1972, heating and air conditioning and other renovations were done. In 1981, additional Sunday School and fellowship spaces were added. Over 25 pastors have served Friendship Baptist Church over its first 100 years. Most recently, Friendship Baptist Church was blessed to call Caleb Levi to serve as Pastor effective September 1, 2019.

The book History of the Friendship Baptist Church of Gray Court, South Carolina 1882-1982 compiled by Mrs. Otis C. Cook in 1982 provides the information for a hundred years of this church.
